Life has nowadays become so hectic that everybody needs entertainment. It refreshes mind and helps to change moods. For my next assignment given by Miss Hamimda Agil regarding feature stories, I have decided to write on the human interest stories. What is the relation between human interest and the entertainment that I have write earlier in this paragraph? It is because nowadays I can see that most people need entertainment in their life. Entertainment has become so important and can be seen very interesting to them that can be assumed as human interest. The basic values of entertainment recently have changed when people did not really take care of the value or information inside the entertainment, but they are merely taken it to entertain them. People are now really into the entertainment. They tend to accept the entertainment more than others. Even for a children, they are exposed to the media, internet, games, and others that all related to the entertainment.
Then, media nowadays did not put a stress on the art in entertaining the audience, but they produce the entertainment merely for the business, which is to gain profit. Do this really the reason to produce the entertainment? Everybody knew that everything that we produce need to have some benefit to us, but, it is wrong if we just focus on the benefit and left behind all the basic reason to produce it. There is no more art in the entertainment. For example we can see TV3 and Hot FM, in which produce many entertainment part and the rating for this station is very high. Everyday, we can see lots of new drama, reality show, game show, and also the emergence of the new artists through this channel to attract the audience and clearly the audience like it. So, can we see this as the human interest? The answer is yes. There is no true function of media at all n which provides information, entertain people and many more. The elements has become entertainment only.
Besides, people also prefer in gossiping artist rather than searching for information via the media. They take the media as the medium of entertainment. As an example the Reader’s Digest in which provides many useful information in everyday life, but what people see or buy is CLEO, Mangga, Hai!, in which merely provides the life of celebrity. Teenagers especially tend to watch Melodi rather than Buletin Utama in getting latest information or news. In this context, I can say that merely the group of elite know the value of media. The New Straits Time (NST) for example tend to attract the class of elite whereas the Harian Metro is the opposite. As we know, NST provide interesting and latest news as well as the rating is good, but the buyer is among the elite circle, while the Harian Metro, when it comes to the story of celebrity on the front page, it attracts almost many readers.
Furthermore, children nowadays are seen to train on the entertainment. Everything that they learned must relate to the entertainment to get a better understanding. Entertainment can be human interest for the children as well. Parents as the primary social of socialization tend to provide the children with the entertainment as if to make their children become more active, energetic in any aspects. Television, games, internet which benefited the children sometimes brings harm to them if they take it really as their interest. Cartoons for example also have added some element of violence in the content which is not good for the children. We can see some porno issue in The Simpson sometimes. Moreover, children are tend to be influenced the most by the surrounding. So, what they heard n saw around them will be practiced. Hearing a contemporary song each time in the car makes them to memorize it and keep singing the song. They are forgetting the kids’ song that use to sing by every kids before.
Lastly, I would like to conclude that entertainment has become human interest nowadays. It is all depend on oneself to choose their way in adapting the entertainment into their life. They have to understand the value of entertainment. That is why we learned media literacy in which enable us to effectively and efficiently comprehend and use any form of mediated communication in our life. We can evaluate or decide whether of not to take some part of the media.
